How to Blow Dry Your Hair for Extra Volume

Looking to add body and bounce to your hair? With the right blow-drying technique, you can achieve salon-worthy volume at home. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you lift those roots and boost your style:

1. Start with the Right Products

Use a volumising shampoo and conditioner to lay the foundation. After towel-drying your hair, apply a volumising mousse or root-lifting spray evenly through the roots and mid-lengths. Avoid applying too much product near the ends, as this can weigh the hair down.

2. Rough Dry First

Before reaching for a round brush, rough dry your hair with your head flipped upside down until it’s about 70–80% dry. This helps lift the roots away from the scalp and gives you a natural base of volume to work with.

3. Use a Round Brush

Section your hair and use a medium to large round brush. Lift each section up and away from your scalp as you dry, directing the airflow from the roots to the ends. For added lift, hold the brush at the roots for a few seconds before slowly gliding it down the length of the hair.

4. Focus on the Roots

Use your hairdryer’s nozzle attachment to concentrate the airflow at the roots. A root-lifting technique is key—dry the roots in the opposite direction to how they fall naturally to maximise lift.

5. Cool Shot to Set the Volume

Once each section is dry, give it a blast of cool air using the cool shot button on your dryer. This helps set the shape and lock in volume.

6. Finish with the Right Products

A light mist of texturising spray or volumising powder at the roots can add extra hold. Avoid heavy oils or serums, as these can flatten the style.

Pro Tip:

For even more volume, use velcro rollers on the crown after blow-drying. Leave them in for 10–15 minutes while your hair cools, then gently remove and style as desired.
